I grew up in North India, where Hindi wasn't something you learned — it was every joke, every scolding, every argument over cricket. Then I moved abroad, married a wonderful woman from the Philippines, and we had a daughter growing up with three cultures at one table.

Two people in my house wanted Hindi. One is growing up into it, so her Dadi's language doesn't end with me. One is choosing it as an adult, to get the jokes, the taunts of the rishtedaar, the film dialogues. Neither of them wanted grammar drills. Both of them wanted to learn the Hindi of real life — and they wanted to do it in a fun way.

So that's why my team and I built Bolbala: to weave Hindi into daily life through play. Games you'd play anyway — a Hindi crossword, word hunts, a chat with a neighbour uncle who won't stop talking. Whether you're learning, practising, or just playing, nobody's keeping score except the सिक्के.

Dinner tables like ours turn out to be everywhere.
